Canucks 5 Avalanche 2

The Vancouver Canucks stopped a two-game losing skid with a 5-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche. The win improved the Canucks home record to 11-1 and increased their lead in the Northwest Division to three points over Colorado and Calgary.

My notes from the game:
  • The Canucks (again) surrendered the first goal of the game - Sakic scored only 1:52 into the game. Unlike on Sunday, however, they found their legs fast and tied it up just after the halfway point of the first period.
  • Except maybe for the Detroit, Dallas and Minnesota games early in the season, the Canucks played as complete a game and with as much energy as I've seen them play all season. They were aggresive all night, forechecked hard, threw their bodies around and threw 44 shots at David Aebischer. Morrison, Naslund and Bertuzzi combined for 14 of those shots.
  • Morrison played one of his best games of the season. He skated hard and was very patient with the puck. He also scored the game-winning goal.
  • Loved the Jovanovski hit on Brisebois. Reminded me of the one Bertuzzi threw on Barrett Jackman a couple of years ago.
  • Lee Goren was a healthy scratch for the first time this season. The Canucks instead called up Josh Green, who didn't disappoint. He played a solid game and scored the Canucks' first goal on a breakaway. He finished with 12:05 minutes of ice-time and a +1 rating.
  • Anson Carter was clipped with a high-stick early in the third period and didn't return. Hopefully, he won't miss many games or the cap-strapped Canucks will have to keep - and pay - for an extra player while he is out.
Next up: Edmonton on Thursday.
