Thinking About Théodore

The rumor du jour seems to involve the Vancouver Canucks in talks with the Montreal Canadiens to acquire Jose Theodore. Interesting. My fiancé has a crush on Jose Theodore so legitimate rumor or not, I thought I'd look at the possibility of this trade actually happening. (And if I have any reason to worry. Just kidding.)

Cloutier was injured on November 20th, though the Canucks didn't announce that he was out for the season until December 13th and subsequently filed for long-term injury (LTI) exemption then. I'm not sure if the LTI exemption is retroactive to his original injury date or not - can someone fill me in on this? - but assuming that the LTI exemption is effective December 13th, that means the Canucks have the equivalent of 120/196th of Cloutier's $2.5 million contract available for a replacement. This equals approximately $1.53 million.

Theodore, on the other hand, makes $4.5 million this season, but his salary cap hit is $5.3 million (average based on 3 year/$16 million contract). If the Canucks were to acquire him today, it would cost the Canucks 102/196th of $5.3 million, or approximately $2.76 million in cap space.

This means that for Theodore to fit under the Canucks' salary cap, they would have throw in the equivalent of $1.23 million in salary over the last 102 days of the regular season. This equals approximately $2.36 million in total salary going the other way. If the LTI exemption is retroactive to November 20th, the difference is $950,000 or approximately $1.83 million in total salary going the other way.

Now consider the salary spent so far on Maxime Ouellet and Rob McVicar, which I believe equals close to $100,000 in cap space. Really, the Canucks need to send somewhere around $1.9 million to $2.5 million the other way

The only Canucks making over $1.9 million this season are Naslund, Bertuzzi, Jovanovski, Ohlund and Morrison.

Here is a comparison between Cloutier and Theodore:

Which of our top-line players is worth the upgrade to Jose?

That's an easy one. Morrison for Theodore. But the Canadiens are apparently asking for Bertuzzi. Nonis and Gainey are reportedly going to meet this weekend to discuss details.

No doubt, Luc Bourdon and Corey Schneider will be mentioned in any big trade for a primetime goalie.

IMHO, if the Canucks are going for the gusto, they mind as well go after the Big Dog himself Brodeur. He's the best of the best and will make us an instant cup contender overnight.

The time to win is now...

I would give them Bertuzzi for Theodore in a heartbeat! Bert blows!

The time to win is now and I'd mortgage a bit of the future but it depends which future.

To me, Bourdon is off-limits, Bieksa isn't. I think the Canucks can afford to give a young goalie prospect like Schneider or Ellis-Plante or Vincent.

I hope Nonis thinks along those lines as well. As much as I want to win the Stanley Cup, I don't know if I can stand another 12 years of being the Washington Capitals afterwards. Minus Alexander Ovechkin.

Personally, I'm not sold on Theodore. If the Canucks were going to trade for a big-salary goalie, there are only two guys I'd want - Brodeur or Luongo.

I'll take a bag of pucks for Bertuzzi. Anything to get rid of his bad penalties, indifferent play, frequent offsides - and oh yeah - $5+ million in salary!
