Marchment Is Not The Answer

The Calgary Flames yesterday inked free agent defenseman Bryan Marchment to a one-year contract. Part of the reason for the Flames' early struggles is that their defense - at the beginning of the season ranked by many, including myself, as one of the deepest in the league - has been constantly beat by quicker forwards, resulting in numerous penalties and powerplay goals against them. In their first four games, the Flames have allowed 11 powerplay goals in 25 opportunities (a mere 56% PK success rate).

Especially at 36 years of age, Marchment hardly seems to be the answer. His skating isn't/has never been that great; his hits have been mostly controversial - ask Doug Weight, Mike Modano, Joe Nieuwendyk and Greg Adams. In fact, the way the game is being called in the new NHL, Marchment may actually be more of a liability. And the way the Flames have killed penalties so far this season... well, let's just say I think I'm gonna be one, happy Canucks fan.
