Tracking The 'Tenders

With Dan Cloutier reportedly close to recovering from post-concussion syndrome and returning to action, here's the latest look at the Canucks' two goalies:

According to the team, there is still no goalie controversy.

Not even a bit?

I don't think so, because teams do look at salary and also past record. Especially as there was nothing wrong with Cloutier's play before his injury, the team would not admit there's a controversy. Cloutier's stat probably hurt quite a bit by playing behind the net in the worst two games of the season (6-0 and 6-2 losses).

Auld is definitely the future. I would keep Cloutier as the number one to protect Auld a little bit, but keep Clouts on a short leash. Come playoffs go with the hot goaltender.

I agree that Cloutier's stats got hurt with those two blowout losses. On the flip side, Auld hasn't allowed the team to get blown out - he's kept his team in every game he's started. It's a matter of word-spinning, I suppose.

Of course Cloutier is the no. 1 right now - kudos to Auld for ably filling in - but here's the question... if Auld should be on a short leash, should Cloutier also be? If Cloutier performs below standards for a few games, and Auld remains steady, will Crawford play Auld more?

On a side note - it sure is nice not to have a Martin Brochu as the back-up, eh?

It depends on how you view it, because those losses were very apparent bad team game overall. And usually teams play more inspired after those games, so Auld perhaps got lucky in a sense that those game went to Cloutier's loss columns. Cloutier did steal the Colorado game by keeping the Avs from scoring in the 1st when they dominated. Judging from history, I don't think Crawford would consider dropping Cloutier as his no. 1 unless Cloutier really struggles and the team starts losing
