More On Milbury

A surprise announcement on Long Island yesterday as the New York Islanders not only announced the firing of coach Steve Stirling, they also announced that long-time GM Mike Milbury will step aside as soon as the team picks a successor:
''It is clear that changes need to be made with the Islanders and I am taking the responsibility of delivering the message firsthand,'' Wang said at a news conference at Nassau Coliseum.

''We have underperformed this season. We have a very talented team. Our fans have every right to be disappointed - so am I and so is everyone in the Islanders family.''
This season?

But before Islanders' fans cheer this move, Milbury isn't going far. Despite his follies this past ten seasons, Milbury is actually getting promoted:
While Stirling hits the unemployment line, Milbury will be "promoted" by Islander owner Charles Wang to the position of senior vice-president of Wang's sports properties, which include the Islanders, New York Dragons (Arena Football League), Bridgeport Sound Tigers (American Hockey League) and Islanders Iceworks, an ice arena that serves as the team's practice facility.
Charles Wang for boss of the year? To Milbury, I think so.

For a look at what the different Islanders rosters might have looked like if Mad Mike wasn't Mad Mike, Mike Chen has a post here.
