Canucks 5 Bruins 2

The Vancouver Canucks improved their league-leading home record to 12-1 as as they beat the Boston Bruins 5-2 last night. All four forward lines scored and Alex Auld stopped 25 of 27 shots to lead the team. The team also regained first place in the Northwest Division.

My notes from the game:
  • The Canucks dominated the first period - spending most of it in the offensive end and outshooting the Bruins 10-2 at one point of the game - and led 2-0 at the first intermission. However, they took five penalties in a row and let Boston back in the game.
  • Even though he took the loss, I thought Hannu Toivonen outplayed Alex Auld. Toivonen stopped 34 of 39 Canucks shots and kept the Bruins in the game until the third period. Auld was okay but made some questionable decisions with playing the puck.
  • Josef Balej started in his first game with the Canucks and wore Greg Adams' no. 8 jersey. He played a mostly quiet game in 7:56 minutes of ice-time and finished with 1 assist, 3 shots and a +1 rating. Even from his limited shifts, and mostly on the third and fourth lines, you can tell that he has some good offensive instincts. With Josh Green now injured, it'll be interesting to see if he continues to get opportunities with the big club.
  • I thought Jarkko Ruutu and Trevor Linden played good, solid games.
  • The Sedin line was again the Canucks' most dangerous line and combined for 2 goals, 2 assists and 8 shots.
  • I don't feel confident with Steve McCarthy on the ice, especially since he came back from injury. Just a feeling I get.
  • Why do the Canucks have problems scoring on their 5-on-3's?
Next up: Ottawa on Friday.
