Home Sweet Home

Good news for three NHL teams this week as they reached deals relating to each of their team's arenas.

In Ottawa, the Bank of Nova Scotia announced a 15-year/$20 million deal for the naming rights to the Senators' home arena. What was formerly known as the Corel Centre will be renamed to Scotia Place. No word on whether free pizzas were included in the deal.

In Pittsburgh, lawmakers finally endorsed a casino-backed plan to build a new arena for the Penguins:
Eighteen state, county and city lawmakers on Wednesday endorsed a plan in which a casino company would build a new hockey arena for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Isle of Capri Casinos would pay $290 million for the arena if the gambling company gets a license to operate a slot machine parlor in Pittsburgh, the team announced last month.

The Biloxi, Miss.-based company has joined with Nationwide Realty Investors, a key player in the Columbus Blue Jackets' arena and surrounding development projects, on a $1 billion plan that would also include the construction of new housing and retail space.
I suppose this means Winnipeg and Kansas City will have to wait some more before they get an NHL team.

New Jersey is also getting a new arena:

The City of Newark and the New Jersey Devils have reached a definitive agreement on the Devils Financing Commitment that will allow the Newark Arena Project to move full speed ahead and be completed on time for the Devils opening Game in October of 2007!
This means that tonight will be the Canucks' last visit to the Meadowlands Arena; the team won't visit the Devils again until the 2008/2009 season.
