Draft Day Trade Winds

It's draft day today. Almost a year ago to the day, Dave Nonis surprised all of us by pulling the blockbuster that brought Roberto Luongo to the Canucks. Eight years ago, Brian Burke surprised all of us by wheeling and dealing in order to get both Sedins. And 15 years ago, Pat Quinn surprised the hockey world by picking one Libor Polasek.

Could there be another surprise in store for us this year? It sounds like it (Iain MacIntyre, Vancouver Sun):

Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren sparked a small, media firestorm here Thursday when he told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Nonis had called about acquiring the second pick in today's entry draft, which is expected to be New Westminster junior star Kyle Turris.

"Dave asked me: 'Would you consider moving down [in the draft order]?' " Holmgren said. "And we said we would. I had about five or six calls like that."

Nonis said he also talked to the Chicago Blackhawks about acquiring the first pick and the Phoenix Coyotes about the third. He said the Canucks, who hold the 25th pick, are exploring all possibilities of moving up in the order.
That said, Nonis isn't exactly willing to give up the farm to move up a few spots (Ben Kuzma, Vancouver Province).

"I've had a few conversations, but we're not close to anything at this point," Nonis said Thursday. "We'd like to move up to No. 6, 7 or 8, but the price has to change and a lot of teams don't know what that price is.

"If we're subtracting from our depth, then we're not going to do that. We didn't win the Cup and there's nobody untouchable, but I haven't been presented with an opportunity that makes any sense."

So, if the price isn't right today?

"If not, we're pretty content to pick at 25 and 33," added Nonis. "I don't feel the need to do anything [at the draft]."
If the Canucks don't trade, they'll pick at the following spots:

  • 1st round, 25th overall
  • 2nd round, 33rd overall
  • 2nd round, 61st overall (from ANA)*
  • 5th round, 145th overall (from ATL)
  • 5th round, 146th overall
  • 6th round, 177th overall
  • 7th round, 206th overall
The Canucks also have a 56th overall pick but either the Los Angeles Kings or Chicago Blackhawks will get it. If the Kings exercise their option to get it - they have the option of getting our 2nd round pick this year or next year - then the Blackhawks will get the 61st overall pick (Anaheim's). If the Kings take next year's pick, the Blackhawks will get the 56th overall pick and the Canucks will keep the 61st.

At any rate, today's first round airs on TSN at 4 PM. Second to seventh rounds goes tomorrow at 7 AM on NHL Network.

J.J., How do you think they did?

I'm very, very happy with the selection of White. He sounds like the perfect player for us.

I'm not too happy with the rest of our picks, but I'll be honest and admit I don't know a whole lot about them.

I posted some of my thoughts on my blog, gunnhockey.com
