Stevie Y Withdraws

From TSN.ca:

Captain Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings has withdrawn his name from Canadian Olympic team consideration.

Yzerman, 40, phoned Olympic boss Wayne Gretzky to say he would not play in Turin.

"It was the right thing to do," Yzerman said following Detroit's 5-2 win over New Jersey on Tuesday night. "I would've loved to play in the Olympics again, but I believe it's time for me to step aside. It's time to let other guys play."
I have to applaud Yzerman for swallowing his pride and realizing that perhaps, his best days are behind him. Before tonight's game, he has only recorded eight points and a -3 rating. By withdrawing his name from consideration, it allows Wayne Gretzky to consider and pick other, more deserving players, especially younger guys like Jason Spezza (25 GP, 11-32-43, +21) and Eric Staal (26 GP, 19-19-38, +5) who are experiencing breakout seasons.
