Canucks 1 Blues 4

It doesn't seem to matter whether they play at home or away, the Vancouver Canucks have suddenly found a way to lose games. Tonight, they lost 4-1 to the St. Louis Blues, who came into the game with the league's least number of wins on home ice and the worst record in the entire NHL. The Canucks have now lost seven of their last eight games.

I have just some brief notes from the game as I will reserve some of my comments for a more in-depth post on the team's current slump later:

  • More than anything else, this loss can be described quite simply - the Canucks, as a team, played an uninspired game and with no sense of urgency. Alarmingly, we have said the same thing a few times in recent weeks.
  • Knowing how fickle Canucks fans are, I know their temptation is to blame Alex Auld. Personally, I won't blame him for this loss. He could have stopped the second Blues goal (Young's), but the first Blues goal (Weight's) was tipped and the third (Sillinger's first) was the result of some horrible Vancouver coverage.
  • Speaking of the third goal, I'm guessing this goal probably resulted in Todd Bertuzzi's last shift on center. Sillinger was Bertuzzi's man and shouldn't have been allowed to skate right into Auld. Todd's played some great hockey recently, but he has never been known for his defensive prowess.
  • I hope Ed Jovanovski and Sami Salo aren't out for an extended period of time. Ohlund needs some help out there; Allen's overextended already; and while Bieksa and Baumgartner's 20+ minutes tonight were admirable, I wouldn't think they're ready to play those minutes on a regular basis.
  • How far into Crow's doghouse has Steve McCarthy fallen? Despite Salo's injury early in the game, Steve McCarthy still only saw 11:58 minutes of ice-time.
  • Probably the only Canuck who played with any intensity and emotion was Matt Cooke. He stirred things up all night and recorded five hits in 14:08 minutes of ice-time.
Next up: Dallas on Wednesday.
