Help Wanted

My account rep left me a message on my cell phone today asking me to call him when I get back in town so I can book my playoff ticket package. Jumping the gun a little bit, aren't we? Not his fault obviously. He left the message before the Vancouver Canucks were shutout 5-0 by the Nashville Predators tonight.

For the first time in a long time, the Canucks are perilously close to missing the playoffs. With tonight's loss and Edmonton's win over the Minnesota Wild, the Canucks and the Oilers currently occupy the 7th and 8th playoff spots in the Western Conference. Both are tied with 76 points and the Oilers still have a game in hand on the Canucks.

However, the Canucks need help to clinch a playoff spot. 9th place Anaheim are only two points back with 74 points, but have four games in hand; 10th place San Jose are five points back and also have four games in hand.

Even if the Canucks can win every game the rest of the way, they still need Anaheim and San Jose to lose games to finish ahead of them in the standings. And by losing games, I mean losing them in regulation time so they don't gain any extra OT or shootout points.

How big are those eight points they gave up to the Blues now?

Eight points to the Blues... eight points from the Oilers if they could just split the series (which they can't now...) with Edmonton... a couple more points from the Flames... Frustrating...

The biggie is how you can't split with the Oilers anymore. If the last playoff spot comes down to the 'Nucks and the Oil, they win the tiebreaker by virtue of their season series against each other.
