Crown 'Dem Kings

The NHL scoreboard didn't do the Vancouver Canucks any favors last night - the Edmonton Oilers won; the Colorado Avalanche still got a point; the San Jose Sharks won in OT. Okay, the Calgary Flames lost so I guess that's something.

But going into tonight's game against the Los Angeles Kings, the Canucks are in ninth place, only one point up on the tenth place Kings. The Kings hold a game in hand.

The good news is, thanks to winning two of three games from the Oilers last week, the Canucks still control their own playoff destiny. They are also still within four points of the Northwest Division-leading Flames.

They're certainly optimistic:

"It's not doom and gloom in the locker-room," insisted Canuck winger Anson Carter after Saturday's 3-2 setback. "We're not devastated. We still control our destiny.

"We still play L.A. a couple of times, we still play Anaheim a couple of times, we still play San Jose a couple of times. We have another game with Calgary. So we're meeting teams in the hunt."
The Kings are in the same position:

"We have to win at least two of three, and the two we have to win are Vancouver and Edmonton," assistant captain Craig Conroy said. "Those are four-point games. This trip we'll let us know where we stand."
Marc Crawford knows his team needs to get even better:

"We didn't get it done," he said. "We had a decent effort. Our guys played hard. It was very close and it went their way.

"We're heading in the right direction and we have to keep our determination and our work ethic at this level. Hopefully, on top of that, we'll improve our execution."
Hopefully, we'll crown 'dem Kings tonight.
