When It Rains

... it pours (Elliott Pap, Vancouver Sun):

The Vancouver Canucks' blue line looks more like the Red Cross with Rory Fitzpatrick the latest hobbled by injury.

Fitzpatrick, the 31-year-old journeyman, didn't skate Tuesday and was dispatched for an MRI to seek answers for a sore ankle. He was seen limping badly Tuesday.

"He's sore from a couple of games back when he twisted his ankle," said head coach Alain Vigneault.

"We don't think it's anything serious, but we're being on the preventative side. I think, at this stage, he's going to be able to go Thursday. We're just getting the MRI done to make sure there is nothing serious there.

"If there is something, we'll deal with it at the time."
His injury puts the Canucks in a bit of a pickle. If Mitchell and Salo were playing, I thought Fitzpatrick would have been a candidate for the press box, especially after his Jan Bulis-like inconsistent play the last few games. If Fitzpatrick is out and with Mitchell and Salo still nursing injuries - the Canucks don't know if either will be able to play tomorrow night (Jason Botchford, Vancouver Province) - the Canucks are basically left with Ohlund and the four rookies on defense. (Okay, technically Krajicek isn't a rookie anymore but you get the idea.)

To complicate things, Luc Bourdon just played his ninth NHL game on Monday night and the Canucks were going to make a decision, perhaps today, on whether or not to send him back to junior (Jason Botchford, Vancouver Province).

The season average may be 2.44, but it's getting worse, instead of better. Every since a 5 goal breakout against a depleted Chicago lineup, they have managed only 2 goals in each of the following 5 games. Going 2-3-0 in that stretch, with only one win in regulation.

That trend is very very alarming.

That other comment was for the post on 'working towards goals'.

Sorry about that!
