Avalanche 1 Canucks 2 (OT)

I know it's late, but after Friday's 2-1 OT win versus the Colorado Avalanche, Tracy and I took off for the long weekend to visit family and hang out with some good friends. We're back now, and I have to say that after three consecutive wins, things are much, much better in Canuck-land. The weather may be crappy, but when the Canucks are winning, even the rain smells good.

With their win on Friday, the Canucks passed the Calgary Flames for 3rd place in the division. They also moved to within four points of the second-place Minnesota Wild, who they play twice in the next week. I'm looking forward to the next five games to see if they can gain any more on the Northwest Division.

Friday's game was easily the most entertaining I've seen at GM Place this season. Both teams played great. There were numerous chances at both ends and only some good saves by both Roberto Luongo and Jose Theodore kept it a low-scoring affair.

From the Canucks' side, the Sedins had another great game against the Avs. They lit them up for six points a week ago; on Friday, Henrik scored both goals.

Once again, Ryan Kesler played a heckuva game. He didn't show up on the score sheet but man, he was skating like the wind out there. He certainly created some good chances by using his speed.

The defense was also solid. Alex Edler was steady, Aaron Miller's getting better and Willie Mitchell was very good. I know I've criticized Mike Weaver in the past, but to give credit where credit's due, he was also very good.

It was a nice team effort all around. Let's have more of those please.

Catching up on some pieces from the MSM:

Some Player News

Some Canucks player news as we approach the start of free agency madness this weekend:

Jason Jaffray led the Manitoba Moose in scoring in the regular season and the playoffs; however, the Canucks couldn't call him up because he didn't have a pro contract. He will soon (Steve Ewen, Vancouver Province).

Jason Jaffray could handle a contract snafu keeping him from playing for the Vancouver Canucks last season.

He could handle toiling for five years in the minors and he could handle the Kootenay Ice trading him in the midst of their 2002 Memorial Cup run, despite him being team captain at the time.

Jaffray, a winger who is in the midst of finalizing a two-year, two-way deal with the Canucks, has been saddled with much worse than anything hockey can dish out at him.
Marc Chouinard, who does have a pro contract (one more year at $1.1 million), might not soon (Elliott Pap, Vancouver Sun).

The Vancouver Canucks have to make their intentions known this week on the potential buyout of disappointing centre Marc Chouinard.

Chouinard, who finished last season in the minors, has a year remaining on his contract at $1.1 million and must clear waivers before the buyout process begins (all figures are in U.S. dollars).
The Canucks are still talking contract with Jeff Cowan the Brabarian (Elliott Pap, Vancouver Sun).

Cowan, meanwhile, will become an unfettered free agent Sunday unless his representative, Rollie Thompson, and Canuck assistant GM Steve Tambellini can wrap up a deal.

"Steve and I had a couple of pretty good talks in Columbus over the weekend," Thompson said Monday. "We're going in the right direction. Both parties would like to make it happen."

Cowan, who was a waiver-wire pickup from the L.A. Kings in late December, earned $532,000 US last season. It's believed he's seeking a two-year deal.
They also qualified defenseman Lukas Krajicek with the mandatory 10% raise.

Tambellini, who is handling many of the contract negotiations, also opened discussions with Krajicek's agent, Petr Svoboda, at the draft. Svoboda described the talks as "positive" but declined any specifics on term despite reports of a two-year offer.

"It doesn't really matter as long as Lukas has another good year and plays well," said Svoboda, the former NHL blueliner. "He was happy with his first season in Vancouver, but he knows he could do better. He loves the town, the organization and the players, so that's the key."
Ditto newly-acquired center Ryan Shannon.

"Ryan is really thrilled about about this opportunity with Vancouver and he's looking forward to getting into camp. And, probably more importantly, he's looking forward to getting back from Europe in one piece."

Duberman said Canucks management has made no promises, other than the standard one of providing an opportunity. Vancouver already has three established centres under contract in Henrik Sedin, Brendan Morrison and Ryan Kesler. Shannon, presumably, would have to vie for fourth-line playing time with the likes of Rick Rypien and Alex Burrows.

"I know Ryan is a good enough player to be on their roster, especially with his speed, but nothing has been promised and we know that," continued Duberman.
I'll be at the Canucks State of Franchise event tonight. Fellow The Crazy Canucks podcaster John Bolwitt might join me as well. We'll talk more about it later tonight or tomorrow morning.

Canucks 2 Ducks 1 (2 OT)

First of all, to those who hopped back on the bandwagon after last night's 2-1 double overtime win against the Ducks, welcome back.

You had to be impressed with the Canucks' effort last night. Many people wrote them off after game one, and especially with the Sami Salo and Kevin Bieksa still missing from the defense corps and Willie Mitchell supposedly playing on one leg, they dug deep and came up with a solid, solid game.

To a man, they responded to the beating they got from us fans and from the media. Like all good teams do, they adjusted their game and neutralized the high-flying Ducks. While they still had problems at times matching Anaheim's speed, they matched them in effort and kept a lot of the Ducks' chances on the outside. The Canucks outplayed the Ducks on even-strength, and in fact, most of Anaheim's chances only came with the man-advantage. They forechecked and forced turnovers and created scoring chances. They went into the corners, got dirty and won puck battles. In other words, they stopped playing like they were scared of the big, bad Ducks and came out of it with home-ice advantage in this series.

Markus Naslund stripped the puck from Chris Pronger for his first goal since game one of round one. Jeff Cowan scored his second in two games in this series. Lukas Krajicek stepped it up and did his best Jyrki Lumme impression. The rookies, Alex Edler and Jannik Hansen, looked unintimidated. I could go through the entire lineup and find something good about the way they played.

And Roberto Luongo? He answered his critics who said that the Ducks have figured him out and have gotten to his head. He stopped 43 shots and now has his first career win against the Ducks.

Now, while the win to even this series at 1-1 was huge, the more important victory for the Canucks is knowing they can beat the Ducks. They hadn't been able to solve them all season long and certainly not in game one. Now, they head home for games three and four knowing otherwise.

Game Day: Blues at Canucks

For some reason, Curtis Sanford is unbeatable against the Canucks. Tonight would be a good time to give him his first career loss against the 'Nucks, no? A win tonight would end the mathematical possibility that the Edmonton Oilers can pass them for a playoff spot. It will also keep them in first place in the Northwest Division.

But first, the Canucks have to improve on their play from the last week. Their specialty teams had been horrendous and Alain Vigneault is hoping that Jeff Cowan can snap the struggling powerplay out of its funk.

In an attempt to fix his power play -- which is currently so impotent it needs Viagra more than a good set-up man -- Alain Vigneault has turned to Jeff Cowan.

Why not? In the last two weeks, Cowan has fixed the team's second line, fixed its toughness issue and, above all, fixed sagging brassiere sales in the Lower Mainland. All things considered, resuscitating the Canucks' comatose power play should be a piece of cake for Cowan.

"He's on a roll," head coach Alain Vigneault said with a shrug. "As a coach, you have to play the guys who are on a roll."
Who's not on a roll is Taylor Pyatt. Despite setting career-highs in goals (18) and points (30), he only has three points (2G-1A) in the last 15 games. It is Quiet Pyatt's spot on the second powerplay unit that Cowan the Brabarian is taking.

"For some reason, Pyatt's game has slipped and not just in his execution but in his physical implications, whereas Jeff's game has picked up," said Vigneault.

"Our power play right now is not performing and we're going to try Jeff there. He's been our hottest player and Pyatt has not played to his potential.

"Cowan and Pyatt on the power play pretty much have the same role in screening the goaltender and tipping pucks."

Translation: As much as Cowan has been justly rewarded for going boldly to the net and collecting eight points in his last seven games, Vigneault is sending Pyatt a message to be more of a presence. Big bodies who play big are a postseason bonus, especially on the power play. And Pyatt does have nine power-play goals.

Game Day: Canucks at Coyotes

The Canucks are in Phoenix tonight to face the Coyotes, the first game of a three games in four nights set on the road. No word from the coaches yet, but Dany Sabourin is expected to make one of the starts and give Roberto Luongo a breather.

Here are today's Canucks-related stuff:

The New Towel Power

Courtesy of the folks from HFBoards and the power of YouTube, here is the clip of Jeff Cowan's second goal last night - his fifth in three games - and the fans' reaction. Especially one fan in particular.

I think most of you are with me when I say that this could be the start of another great Canucks tradition.

Lightning 1 Canucks 5

Last night's game between the Canucks and the Tampa Bay Lightning was a much-anticipated meeting between one of the best defensive teams in the league versus one its highest-scoring ones. It didn't exactly happen. The Canucks' suffocating defense limited the high-powerd Lightning offense to 17 shots on goal - and even less scoring chances - and delivered a convincing 5-1 victory to go undefeated in their three-game homestand (Jason Botchford, Vancouver Province).

It wasn't exactly a night off for Roberto Luongo but it came close.

So often this season, Luongo has carried the Canucks and the hopes of their fans on his formidable shoulders.

Turnabout is fair play.

The Canucks D-men shut down Tampa Bay's top line like a high school kegger after the cops arrive. It helped Luongo to his 38th win of the season, tying Kirk McLean's mark set in 1991-92.
This wasn't the only story of the night as, much like in many others this season, the Canucks put together a clinic in team play.

Daniel Sedin scored 21 seconds in the third period to give the Canucks a two-goal cushion; the goal was his 30th of the season, the first time in his career he's reached that plateau. Henrik added two assists. Bryan Smolinski scored his first goal as a Canuck. Lukas Krajicek played his best game in recent memory. And of course, Jeff Cowan - yes that waiver wire pickup Jeff Cowan - chipped in with two goals. He now has five goals, a fight and a bra thrown at him in three games (Iain MacIntyre, Vancouver Sun).

In the rest of the world, lightning never strikes twice. In Vancouver, it never strikes once, except when it hits five times in three games for Jeff Cowan.

The Tampa Bay Lightning, who entered the National Hockey League in 1992, remained 0-for-ever in Vancouver as the Canucks got a pair of goals from their grinder-turned-sniper Tuesday and beat the 2004 Stanley Cup champions 5-1.

As the saying goes, the Canucks left it all on the ice. And after Cowan's second goal capped a rollicking third period, so did one female fan. At least we assume it was a she who tossed a bra on to the ice, creating a standoff between Canuck defenceman Willie Mitchell, who speared the unmentionable with his stick, and referee Dave Jackson, who was hesitant to transfer it to the penalty box.

Three games ago, Cowan may as well have been John Doe. Now, he's Tom Jones.
Jeff, I take back everything I said when the 'Nucks first plucked you from the waiver wire.

Wild 3 Canucks 4 (SO)

With first place on the line, it was a playoff-like atmosphere at GM Place and the Canucks and the Wild didn't disappoint. The two evenly-matched teams traded scoring chances (though I thought the Canucks had a definite advantage in puck possession), big hits, and big saves; the game needed a shootout, in which Daniel Sedin scored the game-winner in the sixth round. If all Canucks/Wild games were like that, maybe we wouldn't complain so much about seeing them eight times a year. (Okay I still would, but I will still thought the game was entertaining.)

Final score: 4-3 for the good guys and the Canucks extended their Northwest Division lead over the Flames and the Wild to two points. The Canucks also tied the Dallas Stars with 81 points.

One fan at the game had a sign that said "Holy Cowan". Holy Cowan is right.

Not only did the fourth-line grinder take his game to another level Thursday in a 4-3 win over Phoenix -- a shorthanded breakaway goal, a fight, drawing a key penalty and being named the first star -- Cowan replaced Trevor Linden on a line with Brendan Morrison and Matt Cooke in the final period. It wasn't a brief promotion.

Citing a stretch of improved play, Vigneault had Cowan back with Morrison and Cooke on Sunday for a first-place showdown with the Minnesota Wild at GM Place. Cowan responded with two deflected goals in a 4-3 shootout victory as the Canucks kept their hold on the Northwest Division lead.
But it wasn't just Cowan that played an impressive game. It was a team effort and Alain Vigneault's group did a good job in minimizing the Wild's chances. Now, much like Brian Burke called the Wild a cult a few years back, Iain MacIntyre (Vancouver Sun) is calling the current group of Canucks a cult:

But these Canucks are as much a cult as a team, achieving far more this season than most people expected while working with less talent. And profoundly better goaltending.

Get your head around it: these Canucks are the old Wild. Sure, they're far more entertaining -- Lemaire's combover would have stood on end had his players employed the Canucks' "four-man press" or his defenceman joined the rush as readily as Vancouver's -- but the Canucks' strengths, besides goalie Roberto Luongo, are the principles instilled by coach Alain Vigneault regarding work, discipline, merit and accountability. In Burke-speak, the Canucks are a cult.
As long as they keep winning, you can call them whatever the heck you'd like.

Coyotes 3 Canucks 4

I don't know what it is about non-playoff bound teams like the Coyotes, the Blues, the Blue Jackets and the Kings that give the Canucks problems. Yes, the Canucks have managed to win most of their games against these teams - they have a 10-3-2 record these teams after all - but they've had to scrap and claw their way most times to get the two points. Shouldn't they be dominating these teams? Or am I just sounding like a spoiled fan right now?

Last night, the Canucks didn't put the Coyotes away early. Heck, they had to play catch-up after Shane Doan gave the Coyotes a 3-2 lead early in the third period. Daniel Sedin responded with his second goal of the night - his 29th of the season - to tie the game; Markus Naslund then scored the gamewinner with just over four minutes left in regulation. (By the way, does anyone know how many goals Markus has scored lifetime against Curtis Joseph? I swear, Cujo is one of Nazzy's favorite goalies.)

Besides the usual suspects, some Canucks stepped it up. Jeff Cowan did, especially after Josh Green went down with a serious knee injury; he played what was easily his best game as a Canuck. Brent Sopel and Bryan Smolinski also looked more comfortable and both recorded assists on Naslund's game-winning goal.
