Canucks 2 Kings 4
I won't blame last night's loss on surprise starter, Curtis Sanford. The fact is, Sanford didn't get a lot of help from the rest of the team. The Canucks were a team playing their fourth game in six nights and it showed. They came out flat, and by the ten-minute mark of the first period, they had less shots than the Kings had goals. Unfortunately, they didn't get much better than that the rest of the way.
Brendan Morrison was horrible and was benched for much of the latter part of the game. I'm sure he must've thought he was on the Kings bench, Crow was still his coach, and he was still in the dog house. Lukas Krajicek had an off-game. So did Mattias Ohlund and Sami Salo. The Sedins and Naslund cycled and dangled like they usually do, but weren't able to generate much in real scoring chances. Of all the forwards, I thought Ryan Kesler and Taylor Pyatt were the only ones that played a decent game.
It didn't help that Roberto Luongo proclaimed himself not well enough to play during the warmups. It turns out, he's been injured for about a week now (Iain MacIntyre, Vancouver Sun):
Damn, his ribs must reaaaaally hurt.
Kidding aside, if Louie is out for any extended period of time, this will obviously be a big test for the team. They've never gone without him in net for more than the odd game at a time and I'm curious to see how the team responds.

After the Vancouver Canucks maintained for two days that their star goaltender was not injured, Roberto Luongo revealed after missing Monday's game against the Los Angeles Kings that he has a rib injury and is unsure how soon he'll return to his National Hockey League team's lineup. As far as I can remember - I'm trying to think back to last season - this is the first time Luongo has been injured bad enough not to play. He was hospitalized before a game in Montreal last season, but played and shut out the Habs anyway. He was obviously sick during the last playoff game against the Ducks.
"It's been injured since last Sunday in Minnesota," Luongo said after backup goalie Curtis Sanford was rushed in to play what turned out to be a 4-2 loss against the Kings. "The last few days it got worse. I've been in pain all day. Not good enough to go.
"It hurts when I breathe, hurts when I move. It's tough to do your job."
Damn, his ribs must reaaaaally hurt.

Game Day Post: Canucks at Kings
Short pregame post today as the Canucks get set to face Marc Crawford and the Los Angeles Kings. Talk about two teams going in opposite directions. Since the start of November, the Canucks are 11-3-3 while the Kings are 5-9-2.
The Kings do have some offense, but that's not their problem. Their 2.76 goals per game is in the middle of the pack and 25.3% powerplay percentage at home is second-best in the league. Their problem is keeping the puck out of the net. This season, they're allowing 3.21 goals per game (second-worst in the NHL) and the almost half a goal difference is fifth-worst in the league. The Canucks, on the other hand, have only allowed seven goals in their last seven games.
I'm interested to see how the Canucks will follow-up that thrilling, albeit disappointing, game on Saturday. This is a tough stretch for sure. They're back on the road for four games - in six nights, no less - and play all three California teams. That said, it's been more than a month since the Canucks lost two consecutive games so I hope that trend continues. (By the way, if anyone's going to all three CA games, drop me an email.)

Game Day Post: Kings at Canucks
It's a refreshing change that the team coming into The Garage is the team with the goaltending problems. The Kings have our previous coach and they have our previous goaltending problems. Nothing against Marc Crawford, but it is a bit of a coin-ki-dink, don't you think?
After winning their first game in London, the Kings have only won one out of their next seven games. Last night, they blew a two-goal lead and lost 4-3 to the Calgary Flames. So far this season, they're allowing a whopping 4.25 goals per game (2nd worst in the league).
Not that the Canucks are playing perfect right now either. The trademark defense that only let in 2.40 goals per game last season is currently allowing one more goal per game (3.50) and ranks 25th in the league. Obviously, this is one stat the team needs to improve on.
My keys to the game:

- Start strong and don't give up momentum.
- Don't give the kids - Cammalleri, Frolov, Kopitar and Brown - too many scoring opportunities.
- Can we still draft Kopitar?
- Puck possession has to get better. (Gordon McIntyre, Vancouver Province)
- Raymond's Manitoba stint minor. (Gordon McIntyre, Vancouver Province)
- Salo saddles up for little steps at practice. (Brad Ziemer, Vancouver Sun)
- Can't duck the puck. (Brad Ziemer, Vancouver Sun)

Kings 2 Canucks 4
One more win. After last night's 4-2 win against Crow and the Kings, that's all the Canucks need to go from missing the playoffs last season to reclaiming the Northwest Division crown this time around.
I missed the first period of last night's game so I don't know how bad they started the game. I tuned it to a 2-0 deficit before Bryan Smolinski promptly converted on a beautiful feed from Henrik Sedin and the Canucks took over the game. Matt Cooke, Taylor Pyatt and Markus Naslund scored the other Canuck goals.
Again, Alain Vigneault pushed all the right buttons to get his team going.

"Our start wasn't good enough and sometimes you have to mix and match to create execution and intensity, and it seemed to work out," said Vigneault, whose season-long willingness to juggle lines could pay big playoff dividends. This same approach has kept the guys honest and sharp all season long. They know they could go from the first line to the fourth line to the press box and back. And the players love it.
Accountability and honesty are just two of the traits Vigneault has brought to the Canucks after replacing the fired Marc Crawford. The team's success has Vigneault being touted as a coach-of-the-year candidate.Amazing. It really is.
"Nobody predicted we'd be close to winning our division," Luongo said Tuesday, prior to the Canucks playing the Los Angeles Kings. "It's amazing how he implemented a system and got everyone on the same page in the short amount of time we had."

Game Day: Kings at Canucks
When the Canucks and the Kings met last week, Jack Johnson made his much-anticipated NHL debut. And Jan Bulis made sure it was a memorable one.
Tonight, the Canucks have a chance to clinch the Northwest Division title - a Canucks win and a Minnesota Wild regulation loss will do that - but that's just all gravy considering they have already guaranteed themselves a spot in the playoffs, exceeding all expectations at the start of the season.
Here are some of today's 'Nucks-related pieces:

Canucks 3 Kings 2

It was the Canucks' sixth straight win and extended their post-Christmas record to 19-3-3. It also improved them to a league-best 24 wins in one-goal games.

Somewhere in a reverse engineering class, someone should be studying the Vancouver Canucks.Even Roberto Luongo couldn't resist taking a jab at his 'mates:
They seem to be defying physics and the most basic laws of nature with their current pattern: No matter how poorly they play they can't seem to lose.
Nearing the end an abysmal final period, Kevin Bieksa scored off a feed from Markus Naslund to give the Canucks a 3-2 win. The goal went in at the 16:04 mark of the third period.
At the time, the Canucks were getting outshot 13-2.
"It was a game plan well executed in the third -- spend the whole period in our zone and make sure the goalie's cold on the other side so we can get one," Roberto Luongo deadpanned. It was interesting game, to say the least. The statistics certainly don't add up to a Canucks win - the 'Nucks were outshot 33-30 (21-9 in the last 30 minutes), they were outdrawn 57%-43% (82%-18% in the 2nd period), they were outhit 22-14, they gave the Kings seven powerplays in the last two periods - but win they did. Roberto Luongo held the fort until Kevin Bieksa scored the game-winner with less than four minutes left.
It was the Canucks' sixth straight win and extended their post-Christmas record to 19-3-3. It also improved them to a league-best 24 wins in one-goal games.
The Canucks insist all these one-goal games are not part of their master plan. They'd like to win big, but can't seem to put teams away until near the end of games. No complaints here.
"I don't think that's part of the plan," said captain Markus Naslund, who set up Bieksa's winning goal as well as an earlier one by Brendan Morrison. "I didn't think it was a well-played game, especially us taking way too many penalties, but it's another win and you have to be happy about that."

Game Day: Canucks at Kings
After a huge win against the Anaheim Ducks, the Canucks go to Los Angeles tonight to take on a Kings team that really is just playing for pride now. Here are today's pregame pieces.
As expected, Roberto Luongo will be back in goal tonight and he has only one goal in mind:

As expected, Roberto Luongo will be back in goal tonight and he has only one goal in mind:
Alain Vigneault wanted to put an end to any goalie controversy before it began.Tommi Santala will also draw into the lineup:
"Louie's playing [tonight]," Vigneault said with a laugh after Wednesday's energetic practice.
The truth, of course, is there never was a doubt.
Despite Dany Sabourin's impressive win, Roberto Luongo will be back in net trying to regain the rhythm that helped him to a 17-3-2 record in his past 22 games with a 2.18 GAA and a .935 save percentage.
Centre Tommi Santala, who hasn't played for the Canucks since Dec. 8, will likely dress tonight. He skated on a line Wednesday with Markus Naslund and Jan Bulis, although Vigneault said he hasn't decided exactly where he will play Santala. He hasn't in the past, and I bet Markus didn't complain about having Tommi as his centerman:
"I think Tommi is going to go in tomorrow," Vigneault said. "I'm not sure where yet. I wanted to see how he fit in there."
He's had more linemates than he cares to count. He's been playing on the third line.Like he has in the past, however, he simply let his on-ice play do the talking:
But Canucks captain Markus Naslund isn't complaining.
"He hasn't said a word," coach Alain Vigneault said.
"It's been, 'Whatever you want, Coach.' That's the attitude you want. When you have a team-first attitude, he's proving without a doubt that he's a great leader and a very good captain for this team. He knows what he needs to do. He wants to win like everyone else."
Naslund endured a 17-game goal drought earlier this season and his offensive game seemed out of sorts. Lately, he has been a more consistent contributor to a Canuck offence that seems to finally be living up to that scoring-by-committee mantra we heard so much about at training camp. There's already been talk about Roberto Luongo's Hart trophy candidacy, but what about Alain Vigneault for the Jack Adams?
In his last 18 games, Naslund has eight goals and 21 points.
"I'm feeling better and better about my game and I'm feeling that the confidence is coming back, which I think is such a huge part of anyone's game and especially if you are an offensive player," he said. "It's fun. It's fun to win and it's fun to be on a roll like we are right now."
A poll on nhl.com in this age of electronic ballot stuffing isn't exactly hard science, but there is enough recent anecdotal evidence to support the results from the one the league had up Wednesday.Only five shopping days till the trade deadline. And the players are trying not to care:
The poll question was simple: Who deserves the Jack Adams award as coach of the year?
Three were running away with it -- the Pens' Michel Therrien, the Predators' Barry Trotz -- and Vancouver's Alain Vigneault.
Canuck defenceman Sami Salo admitted he, personally, wouldn't have made the trade, and winger Matt Cooke warned: "You can criticize [a GM] for not pulling the trigger, but you give up that much, it better work out."Kinda like what Nashville did to get that Forsberg fellow:
Later, Cooke added: "The best mindset [for Canuck players] is to approach the deadline like nothing will happen and prepare yourself to win with the guys we have here. That's what we're doing. It's expensive right now. We don't agree with giving up everything for one guy."
So in the short term, the Canucks may not be thrilled to see Forsberg in a Predator uniform for the rest of this season. But in the bigger picture, there's no question that Dave Nonis made the right move by making no move at all—at least as far as paying through the nose for a guy like Forsberg. And finally, here's a piece on Mike Johnston, former Canucks assistant coach and now with the Kings:
That's not to suggest for a moment that Forsberg wouldn't have looked good in a Canuck uniform. But the timing of such a move wouldn't have made any sense for an organization that appears to be two years away from being in the position to make a big-ticket purchase at the trading deadline.
When it became abundantly obvious Mike Johnston's interview to become head coach of the Vancouver Canucks was nothing more than a courtesy waste of his time, he followed Marc Crawford to L.A. where they both knew the going with the Kings was going to be tough.______________
