So Far, So Good Grabner

Last season, Michael Grabner faced some criticism from his Spokane Chiefs coach. This season, things are going much better for the Vancouver Canucks' first-round pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Admittedly, I don't get to see the Manitoba Moose first-hand, but by all accounts, Grabner has been able to shoulder the offensive load while Mason Raymond and Jason Jaffray are up with the Canucks.

From Ken Wiebe (Winnipeg Sun):

With a sizable chunk of the offence on loan to the Vancouver Canucks or on the shelf with a variety of ailments, the Manitoba Moose needed someone to carry the mantle as the go-to guy.

It was expected they'd have to do it by committee but Michael Grabner has ascended to the throne.

The Austrian speedster scored for the fifth consecutive game -- this time netting a pair to give him 13 on the season -- to lead the Moose to a 5-1 victory over the Rochester Americans before a crowd of 7,557 at the MTS Centre last night.

There have been the expected growing pains for the first round selection of the Vancouver Canucks in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, but Grabner seems to be figuring out that he can have an impact every game with his strong skating and heavy shot.
In fact, in the seven Moose games since Christmas, Grabner has seven points (6G-1A) and a plus-one rating. His play has earned reviews and there's talk around Winnipeg that he could represent the team in the AHL All-Star game at the end of the month:

Ken Wiebe again:

The emergence of Michael Grabner as a primary scoring option has been big news around these parts.

And in the coming days, we'll find out if the rookie winger with the Manitoba Moose will take his place among the rising American Hockey League stars in Binghamton, N.Y., at the end of the month for the annual AHL All-Star Classic.

The Austrian speedster is a high profile first round draft pick (14th overall, Vancouver Canucks, 2006), who has moved into the team scoring lead and is among the Top-5 rookie scorers in the AHL.
Grabner's recent stretch -- the 20-year-old saw his five-game goal scoring streak end last night -- has been a thing of beauty to witness.

The man who scored 55 goals and 105 points with the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League the past two seasons has been using his speed and shot and the results have been impressive.
And what about the criticism's from last year? Scott Arniel chimes in:

"He's battling to make plays and that's all I ask of him," said Moose head coach Scott Arniel. "We knew he had the skill and we knew he had the speed.

"He's a guy that is dangerous when he has the puck in the offensive zone, but he's also doing a nice job of playing within the system."

Grabner has been focusing on improving his play away from the puck.

"I'm a first-year guy and I'm just trying to play well in my defensive zone and not make any bad mistakes there," said Grabner. "That's more important for me right now."
A lot of Canucks fans questioned Grabner's early selection - 14th overall when he was ranked in the later rounds - but the early returns in this, his first full season as a pro, seem to be just fine. So far so good.

Preseason: Flames 0 Canucks 4

I wasn't surprised that last night's 4-0 win versus the Calgary Flames was as chippy as it was (Jason Botchford, Vancouver Province). After all, we hate these guys almost as much as we hate the Leafs.
"It was crazy, I guess it's going to be a fun series against them this year," Jeff Cowan said. "It was intense right from the start to the end.

"Their style of play is real dirty and grinding and with Keenan there it's only going to get worse."
What surprised me though was the collective play of the younger guys. Maybe it shouldn't have because of the praise we've been hearing about this group especially during training camp, but against a Flames team that iced a fairly veteran lineup, they certainly stepped it up a notch.

Michael Grabner, often-criticized for his soft play, didn't seem to mind going into the tough areas and scored a goal and an assist. Jason Jaffray scored a beauty when he knocked down a Grabner shot and then fired it into the net. Ryan Shannon was good again and scored a goal skating down the wing - more on Shannon later today. Alex Edler, Nathan McIver, Corey Schneider - all stood out in a tough game, albeit in the preseason, against a tough team.

More of today's links, including a chat with Mike Keenan and more rave reviews for the younger Canucks:
The Canucks are back on the ice tonight against Dustin Penner and the Edmonton Oilers. Puck drops at 7 PM; radio broadcast, as usual, on TEAM 1040.

Stories From Prospects Camp - 09/10/2007

By most accounts, Canucks Prospects camp has started to separate the men from the boys. Edler, Bourdon, Raymond and Hansen have had impressive camps, and even with the odd hiccup, they will most likely join the veterans at main camp later this week. But for the most part, there has been plenty of praise for the kids, fuelling hope - and expectations - that they can fill the two remaining roster spots on the team.

On Raymond and Hansen (Ben Kuzma, Vancouver Province):

The only constant through three days of determining the dozen who will be promoted to main camp Thursday is the explosive play of right wingers Mason Raymond and Jannik Hansen.

While much ink has been spilled chronicling the battle between Edler and Bourdon for the seventh blueliner spot on an NHL roster that seems virtually set, the gaping second-line hole on right wing is fast becoming headline material.

Especially if the solution is found from within, rather than the trade route.

"For me, the best player on the ice [Sunday] was Hansen," said Vigneault. "He had a lot of speed and good moves. If he comes to main camp and does what he's doing now, then we'll have to see if we have a player."

Game Day: Coyotes at Canucks

It's been a while since the Canucks have lost two games in a row, which probably explains the mild sense of panic suddenly going through Canuck-land. Well, that and the fact that they haven't played their A-game in a few games.

Tonight's opponents, the Phoenix Coyotes, are another one of those non-playoff teams that the Canucks can't take lightly. I hope they learned their lessons after they lost to the Blues on Tuesday.

Kevin Bieksa knows there's nothing worse than wounded pride, because any non-playoff team can be a handful if taken lightly.

The Canucks defenceman admitted that's what happened Tuesday at St. Louis in a 3-1 loss to the Blues, who prevailed without traded stars Keith Tkachuk and Bill Guerin.

"We've learned that lesson the hard way against a team we should probably beat," said Bieksa.

"They had lost their best two players and I think Louie [Roberto Luongo] put it best -- there are no free points.

"We definitely want to come out and put them [Coyotes] away early because we know they have nothing to lose and will be playing for pride. We want to give them a reason to shut it down a little."

The Canucks sang that same refrain before home-ice losses to Chicago (Feb. 7), a shootout setback to Columbus (Jan.30) and an overtime loss to Los Angeles (Jan. 26).
Third time's a charm?

For what it's worth, the Calgary Flames beat the Minnesota Wild last night in a shootout and are now tied in points with the Canucks; the Wild are only a point behind because they *ahem* earned a point last night as well.

Here are more 'Nucks links for today:
